Time Travel-Part 5

“I think it is,” Tom said. “Maybe if we break it, then the world would be safe from the dangers of taking things from the past!” Annie looked at her feet. “But how do we destroy it?” She said, “Also, if we destroy the time machine, then that would mean we could never get back to my dad right?” Tom considered this, and he scratched his head in worry. Annie is right, if we destroy the time machine, then the world would be safe, and we would also be safe, but Annie’s dad and my dad might make another one. Suddenly, an alarm went off. Tom and Annie looked around in panic, would if it was Tom and Annie setting off the alarm? Footsteps sounded in the distance. Suddenly, the door to the first room opened.
“We have to destroy the time machine now!” Tom said in a panicked whisper.
“No! We have to save my parents,” Annie said. The footsteps grew closer “I think they are in here,” One voice said, dangerously close to the secret door. Tom’s eyes widened with alarm. “We have to go through the machine now, and destroy it. Your dad can always make a new one anyways. The only way to be safe if to get through the machine and destroy it!” Tom said, still in a whisper. A banging on the secret door started, and Tom looked toward the door in dread. “If they break down that door, then we are dead for sure,” Tom said. Another huge bang landed onto the door. The walls shivered from the impact.
“Destroy the machine Tom,” Annie said, with fear in her voice. Tom nodded, and started to inspect the machine. There were many buttons, thankfully all labeled. There were choices to set your time, where you wanted to go, and so on. He couldn’t spot any button saying emergency destruction or anything like that. Tom started to sweat in worry. Then, a crack appeared in the wall.
“Tom, hurry!” Annie said.
“I know, I know. I can’t find emergency destruct!” Tom yelled in frustration. Another bang shook the room and the crack widened. Tom could already see the shoes of men on the other side. They seemed to be backing up, looking like they were about to strike again. Time seemed to slow down as they did, and the final bang, louder than all the rest, broke the whole wall down. Annie screamed, and Tom grabbed her hand. Tom tried to find an exit as more than a dozen men piled into the room with weapons in their hands. The only exit now would be the time machine. He charged toward the machine, with Annie screaming and crying behind him. As he jumped into the Time Machine, he turned to see one last glance back at the men. For a split second, he could see Annie’s dad and Tom’s dad at the back of the room, trying to get to the front. Suddenly, all the yelling, screaming, and objects all disappeared, and Tom closed his eyes in satisfaction.
When Tom woke up, Annie was already awake. They were both in what looked like a grassland, peaceful and quiet.
“Tom. I see you've woken up,” Annie said.
“Yeah, I’m awake,” Tom replied.
“I found a button when you were still asleep. It was right by your hand. It said something about emergency destruct. I wasn’t sure what it was,” She gave Tom the button. It was simple, just a round circle with letters on the top.
“I guess we should just press it then,” Tom said.
“Yeah, OK,” Annie replied.
“Let’s press it together!” Tom said. They both held the button in their hands.
“Ready? Three, two, one,” Tom said. They both pressed the button at the same time. There was no after effect of the button, as there shouldn’t be. Tom looked at the grassland. THe sun was just setting, making the scene look even more peaceful. They were away from all the chaos now. Away from panic and fear and misfortune. At least for now. Tom and Annie walked toward the small town they saw in the distance, smiling along the way. A little kid ran up to them. “Who are you?” He asked.

  1. ....While a good literary device I think that the 'cliff hangers' are starting to be overused like a metaphor being squeezed to the last drop as to annoy the he** out of the towel.
